As Christians, we live in a world that easily sucks us into sin. We follow the laws of the world but disregard the laws of God’s Word. Sure, we are set free through grace and are under New Testament law, but it doesn’t mean we should live in a state of lawlessness knowing that we can ask for forgiveness later.
Our love for God grows cold when we allow sin to separate us from Him. Sin is a wedge that keeps us from our Creator.
Matthew 24: 9-14 says: “You will be hated all over the world because you are my followers. And many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other. And many false prophets will appear and will deceive many people. Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world so that all nations will hear it, and then the end will come.”
Following God is not easy. When things don’t go our way, or sin draws us in, spiritual decay builds up on the inside, and we turn away from our Father. We see the world through a lens of our humanity instead of through a lens of holiness.
We must approach everything that comes our way from God’s perspective — not mans. God’s perspective is always available to us. But sometimes we struggle trusting it. To build trust, we must spend time with God to get to know Him and His Word.
We also can sometimes draw others away from the Lord when we water down the Gospel. It’s hard to endure sound doctrine, and it often hurts people’s feelings when we call them out for their sin. But we do MORE damage when we provide a lukewarm Gospel. This does not mean that we should be harsh. We must balance preaching the truth and doing it with love!
So, how do we keep our hearts from growing cold? Here are five ways:
1. Submit to God and His power and authority.
When the Lord is our authority, and the Holy Spirit is our guiding light, then even when the world tries to claim our hearts, we won’t allow it!
2. Don’t let Satan win.
When we decide to follow Christ, we are a target for evil. Satan will do everything he can to tear us down or distract us from who God created us to be. We are in a battle, and we must fight back! We have the power to call Satan out and let him know he is messing with the wrong person, for we (with Christ) are already victorious!
3. Make yourself light so that nothing hinders you and you can run your race!
It’s easy to allow ourselves to be burdened and to carry a heavy load. But when we do that, we hinder ourselves from being able to run the race God has called us to — the race that calls us to honor God’s Word.
4. Make a choice every day to die to self.
We have to know and accept that life is not about us. Luke 9:23 says: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” We need less of us and more of HIM!
5. Find your strength in the Lord.
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” –Philippians 4:13
We cannot resist the world without finding strength in the Lord! Thankfully, he offers it freely!
Don’t let your hearts be waxed cold but keep it on fire for Jesus!
